Utility Construction Technician
Position Summary
Summit Service Solutions is seeking a dependable Utility Construction Technician to support utility installation and inspections on various locations. This is a hands-on position involving physical labor, job-site preparation, material handling, equipment support, utility locating, trenching, and general construction activities.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working outdoors, in varied weather conditions and in confined spaces, following safety procedures, working around heavy equipment, and performing physically demanding tasks throughout the workday. Experience in utility construction, excavation, underground utilities, or general construction is preferred.
This is a contract to hire position based on performance, attitude, and attendance.
Responsibilities
- This position will require a large amount of travel and employees will be staying over night in hotels on a regular basis (Hotel accommodation and per diem will be provided)
- Assist with utility installation and underground inspections on various projects.
- Perform trenching, digging, grading, backfilling, and general site preparation as needed.
- Use a variety of hand and power tools and assist with construction equipment.
- Help identify and locate existing underground utilities prior to and during construction activities.
- Assist equipment operators with positioning, alignment, movement, and placement of materials.
- Handle, load, unload, and stage tools, equipment, pipe, and other construction materials.
- Assist with the setup and operation of pumps, generators, compressors, and other job-site equipment.
- Follow project plans, specifications, and direction from supervisors to complete assigned work.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and clean work area throughout the project.
- Assist with traffic control and maintaining safe work zones when required.
- Perform routine care, cleaning, and basic maintenance of tools and equipment.
- Follow all company and job-site safety requirements and promptly report hazards, incidents, or unsafe conditions.
- Work effectively as part of a construction crew and assist with additional project duties as needed.
Requirements
- Previous construction, utility, excavation, or related experience preferred.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including digging, lifting, carrying, bending, and standing for extended periods.
- Comfortable working outdoors and around heavy construction equipment.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to read and understand basic construction plans or project specifications.
- Reliable transportation and dependable attendance.
- Must be willing to comply with required drug and alcohol testing.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe and professional job site.
- Additional duties may be assigned based on project requirements.
Physical Skills and Abilities:
- Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust, concrete and asphalt.
- Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue and to effectively jump, sprint or throw an object.
- Requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multi-limb coordination.
- Must be able to quickly move arms and legs.
- Excellent stamina is required.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid and appropriate state driver’s license prior to employment.
This is a safety sensitive position and all candidates will be required to pass a DOT issued drug test and will be subject to randomized drug testing.
